Neuroplasticity: how to rewire your brain to do hard things
Your life will never be the same once you understand this.
You’ve been trying to change your life.
With willpower and motivation.
You know it doesn’t work.
But you keep trying anyway. Because nobody told you there was another option.
There is.
I weighed 59 kilograms (130 lbs) the first time I walked into a gym. Seven years later, 102 kg (225 lbs). In my thirties, same pattern. I couldn’t clip into cycling shoes without falling over. Two years later, 400 kilometres (250 mi) every week.
I didn’t know the science. I just called it discipline and stubbornness.
Then I went looking for the answer.
For most of the 20th century, scientists believed that the adult brain was fixed. You got the neurons you got, and after childhood, the wiring was locked in.
Turns out that was complete bullshit.
What I stumbled into was neuroplasticity: your brain’s ability to physically rewire itself based on what you do, over and over.
The same thing that built my body also built the neural pathways that made me a cyclist. It’s the same thing that made me quit things, too.
The brain doesn’t judge. It just reinforces whatever you repeat.
This essay is the explanation in plain English, and your cheat code.
It’s not a “here’s 5 easy steps” piece. If that’s what you’re looking for, you’re in the wrong place.
Once you understand how change actually works, you stop fighting yourself and start working with the machinery.
You built the brain you have, one rep at a time.
You can build a different one and completely change your life.
I - What is neuroplasticity?
Your brain is a muscle.
And like any muscle, it can be trained.
Your brain is not fixed.
It is constantly rewiring itself.
Every thought you have, every action you take, every experience you have is reshaping the physical structure of your brain.
Picture a big grassy field with a big oak tree on the other side.
The grass is lush, green, as tall as your hips.
Nobody has walked across it yet, so it’s just... grass.
Now imagine you decide to walk from one side to the tree every day, taking the exact same route.
On day 1, you can barely tell that anyone has walked there.
On day 20, there’s a faint, scruffy line where the grass is a bit flatter.
On day 100, there’s a clear dirt path. The grass gave up growing there because you keep stepping on the same spot.
It’s now easier to walk that way than to cut through the grass. The path does the work for you.
Your brain does the exact same thing.
Instead of using grass, it uses tiny brain cells called neurons that send signals to each other.
The first time you do something, that route is brand new and weak, like that faint trail in the grass.
Every time you repeat the same thought or action, the same route gets used again and again. And just like the grass path, the more it gets used, the stronger and faster it becomes (known as synaptic plasticity).
Until eventually, it’s the route your brain picks automatically without you even trying.
This is neuroplasticity: your brain’s ability to build new paths and wear old ones down, based on what you do, over and over.
But there is a problem.
Neuroplasticity doesn’t distinguish between good habits and bad ones.
Your brain just reinforces what you do over and over again.
If you scroll Instagram for 3 hours every night, your brain optimises for that. It builds stronger pathways for dopamine hits and distraction.
If you write for 3 hours every morning, your brain optimises for that. It builds stronger pathways for focus and thinking.
The brain doesn’t judge; it just adapts.
II - The reason change is hard
Picture the same grassy field.
Except now it’s not empty - there’s already a big, wide, worn, dirty path running through it.
You’ve walked the path so many times that it’s basically a highway.
When you decide to take a different path, you have to start walking a new route a few steps to the side.
Old paths don’t get deleted.
They just fade a little. You’d think if you stop walking the old path, it disappears.
It doesn’t. Not quickly, anyway. Sure, it gets a bit grassier. But the dirt underneath is still packed hard. So even months later, that old route is still easier to walk than the new one you started.
This is why an old habit can pop right back up after a stressful week, even if you thought you “fixed” it.
You didn’t erase the path; you just stopped using it for a while.
When you’re tired (and let’s face it, you mostly are), your brain always takes the easy path.
Your brain hates spending extra energy when it doesn’t have to.
Walking a new trail takes concentration: you have to watch your feet, think about where you’re going, and push through the grass.
Walking the old path takes zero thought. Your feet just know the way.
The moment you’re stressed, tired, distracted, or not paying attention, your brain automatically defaults to whichever path is easiest, not the one you’re meant to take.
That’s not you failing. It’s not weakness, and it’s not a lack of discipline either.
It’s simply your brain doing exactly what it evolved to do: conserving energy. You’re still running on the same wiring as your ancestors.
Your brain has spent years, decades, myelinating those neural pathways.
Myelin is a fatty substance that wraps around neural connections, making signals travel faster.
Think of a playground slide. A wooden slide is slow and grippy.
Now imagine someone waxes it. Same slide, nothing is structurally different.
Except now it’s a slippery slide, and you fly down it with way less effort.
The wax is what myelin does to your nerve wire.
Your brain doesn’t hand out this speed upgrade randomly.
It wraps myelin around the paths you use a lot - the well-worn trail gets an upgrade to a real, paved, slippery superhighway, while the paths you rarely use stay as bare and slow gravel.
This is why a skill that used to feel clunky and effortful (like reading, dribbling basketball, or doing times tables) eventually starts to feel instant.
Your brain literally built a superhighway for it.
The goal is to walk the new path so many times that it becomes the easiest path.
Until that happens, the old path is just sitting there, fully paved, ready to go.
As the saying goes, “you are what you repeat.”
And your repetition shaped who you are today. Your thoughts. Your views. Your identity.
So why does your brain fight you every time you try?
III - You’re casting a spell on yourself
It’s 5 am and the alarm goes off. You slap it quiet.
You lie there in the grey light with one leg out under the blanket, and you mutter four words into your pillow:
“I’m not a morning person.”
Then you hit snooze.
Feels like nothing, right? Just a groan. Just a fact about yourself, the way you might say you have brown eyes.
But something did just happen.
You think that sentence is a description. But your brain doesn’t hear a description. It hears an instruction.
Your brain is a prediction machine.
Its number one job - above thinking and feeling - is to guess what happens next so it can keep you alive.
And it hates being wrong.
When reality matches its prediction, it relaxes: good, I understand the world.
When reality surprises it, that’s an uncomfortable jolt, a signal that something needs fixing.
Here’s what happens when you say “I’m not a morning person” and mean it:
You just handed your brain a prediction. Mornings will be hard for me. And now your brain, wanting desperately to be right, quietly gets to work making the prediction come true.
It’ll let you feel a little groggier. It’ll whisper, see, I told you, go back to sleep.
It will wave you toward the snooze button because the button confirms the story.
You’re casting a spell on yourself.
And every morning you obey it, you walk the path again, and the grass gets a bit flatter.
Now, flip it. What happens the day you decide I’m a morning person? What happens the moment your actions and your story stop matching?
That tension is called cognitive dissonance.
It’s that deeply uncomfortable feeling you get when what you do doesn’t match who you think you are.
Most people quit at this point because it’s uncomfortable as fuck.
There’s even a spot in your brain - a fold sitting roughly behind the bridge of your nose - that acts like a smoke alarm for exactly this.
Its whole job is to scream MISMATCH! MISMATCH! when your behaviour clashes with your beliefs.
When the “morning person” who overslept forgets to buy the gift, tells the small lie, skips the workout they swore they’d do, that alarm goes off.
Here’s the important part. When that alarm blares, your brain has only two ways to make it stop:
Change the behaviour back - take the well-trodden path. “Ugh, who was I kidding? I’m not a morning person.” Relief. Easy. The old path is right there.
Change the identity - start making a new path so the behaviour stops being new and starts being home.
Almost everyone picks option one. Because option two is uphill.
The old path is a clear path and easy to take; the new one is tall grass you’ve never crossed.
Most people try to change from the outside in. They attack the behaviour directly.
“I need to run three times a week.”
That works... for about eleven days. Maybe fourteen if you’re lucky.
Then you snap right back into your old ways, because underneath, the story never changed.
You’re still a person-who-doesn’t-run. It’s exhausting.
Nobody wins a fight against themselves for long.
The trick is to flip the direction. Change the story first, and let the behaviour flow downhill from it.
Watch the difference in these two sentences:
“I’m trying to run.” → a person who doesn’t run, fighting against who they are.
“I’m a runner.” → a person who runs, because that’s just what they do.
The second one isn’t a lie you tell yourself.
It’s a claim you cash.
Every time you lace up and run, even for five minutes, even badly, you drop a coin in a jar labelled “I’m a runner.”
One run doesn’t fill up the jar. But it’s proof. It’s a vote.
Do it enough times and one day you check the jar and realise you’re not trying to be a runner anymore. You just are one. The path moves, and it’s home now.
This is the secret in every transformation.
However, knowing how the spell works doesn’t break it.
IV - Do uncomfortable things
If you feel safe in the area you’re working in, you’re not working in the right area. Always go a little further into the water than you feel you’re capable of being in. Go a little bit out of your depth. And when you don’t feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you’re just about in the right place to do something exciting. - David Bowie
“Stepping outside your comfort zone.”
You’ve heard that phrase a thousand times. There’s truth to it.
When you do easy and familiar things, your brain runs on autopilot. It’s neurologically stagnant.
It’s the reason why people who choose comfort never really change. They avoid the conditions necessary for rewiring.
Picture a kid learning to ride a bike. The moments before they can ride.
The wobble. The foot slams down to catch themselves.
That ugly, jerky, embarrassing stretch where they’re not falling, and they’re not riding - they’re somewhere in between, panicking.
That wobble is where the brain rewires. Everything before it and after it is just exercise.
Your brain changes when you get something wrong.
It’s still a prediction machine.
All day, every day, it’s guessing what happens next.
When you reach for a mug, it predicts the weight.
When you take a step, it predicts the floor.
When the prediction matches reality, nothing happens. No update needed.
The map was accurate. Keep walking.
But when you reach for the mug, and it’s empty, and your arm flies up, something happens.
Chemically, your brain releases a squirt of neuromodulators - acetylcholine and norepinephrine - and that surge flags the circuit as one to come back to.
They put a sticky note on those specific circuits that says: "This one was wrong; come back and fix it."
You know the feeling. Frustration. Strain. “Ugh, I’m bad at this.”
That’s the sign you’re doing something wrong, and it’s the sensation of your brain marking the file for editing.
Pick something too easy, and you predict every time. No mismatch, no sticky notes.
This is why you can do something for ten years and not get better at it.
A decade of accurate predictions is a decade of nothing to update. Comfort is a flat line that feels like progress because you’re moving.
Pick something too hard, and the signal is too noisy to be useful.
Your brain can’t tell which circuit to fix when all of them are failing.
Worse, you don’t get enough right reps to lay anything down.
You get demoralised and quit. A brain that isn’t showing up isn’t rewiring.
The zone in between is narrow, and it’s specific: hard enough that you fail regularly, easy enough that you sometimes don’t.
Enough success to show the brain what “correct” looks like so it has something to aim at.
V - Repetition and time
Use time as a tool.
The wobble on the bike tags the circuit for editing. That’s one rep. Rep one gets you a slightly better connection.
But a connection isn’t a skill. A skill is a fast connection. And the speed comes from myelin (the fatty substance).
The only way to get that speed is to do something again, and again, and again.
Your internet connection speeds up when you buy a faster plan. You haven’t paid for the speed in your brain yet.
Ten hours in one weekend vs. ten hours spread over ten weeks is wildly different. The spread-out version wins by a mile in basically every study that’s ever been done.
When you cram, you stack reps on top of a circuit that’s already cooked.
You feel great - fluency during a cram session is high, which is why most people trust it - and then it’s gone by Thursday.
Space it, and each session is a fresh error signal, a fresh tag, a fresh night of consolidation.
And there’s a bonus.
Coming back after a gap means the memory has decayed slightly, so retrieving it is effortful, and effortful is a stronger signal than easy retrieval.
The forgetting between sessions is what makes the next rep count.
Frequency beats duration.
So, if your goal is to run or to get your body into shape, whatever it is, the most important thing you can do is just to show up.
Some days you’ll feel motivated. Other days you’ll have nothing.
Even a half-assed session is good. It’s still sending signals and reinforcing the connection.
Doing this takes time, and there is no magic number. Varied studies on habit formation range anywhere from 18 to over 250 days.
Reps are the currency.
Early reps will feel like climbing a steep hill at first, then flatten out. Early reps are worth enormously more than late ones.
It’s a strange gift: the phase that feels the hardest is the phase paying you the most.
VI - You are what you consume
You’re in bed. It’s 10:30 pm. Your phone buzzes.
You told yourself you’d be asleep by 10:00.
You open Instagram. There’s a reel. You watch it. Another one starts. You watch that too. And the next one.
There’s this concept called “neurons that fire together, wire together.”
The reach for the phone fires. The scroll fires. The relief fires. They fire together.
Over and over, hundreds of times a night, thousands of times a month.
Your brain is learning that the correct response to discomfort is “reach for phone, escape into content.”
You’re doing reps. Your brain doesn’t care if it’s good or bad. It strengthens whatever fires.
Now flip it.
You’re reading a book. A dense paragraph. You don’t understand it on the first pass. The discomfort fires.
But instead of reaching for your phone, you reread the paragraph and sit there confused for a bit. The circuit that fires is “discomfort, keep going, meaning arrives.”
Same “neurons that fire together.” Two completely different brains are being built.
Your brain is literally a reflection of what you consume.
Every conversation you have, the people you surround yourself with, every piece of media you let in. Every single input shapes your wiring.
You’re choosing which route in the grass field gets walked flat, whether you realise it or not.
VII - The impact of your environment
If your inputs shape your wiring, your environment shapes your inputs.
You can’t “choose what to consume” if the thing you’re trying to avoid is in your pocket, buzzing every five minutes.
Victor Hugo figured this out in 1830.
He promised his publisher a novel - The Hunchback of Notre Dame - and the deadline was approaching.
He was a year late. The publisher was furious.
Hugo had been distracted by parties, salons, and other projects. He couldn’t get the work done.
So he did something that sounds insane but was perfectly rational once you understand it.
He gathered every piece of clothing he owned and locked it in a chest. Everything except a large grey shawl.
He gave the key to his assistant with strict instructions: do not return it.
He had no clothes to wear outside and was too embarrassed to leave the house.
So he stayed home and wrote.
He finished the novel in five months.
What Hugo did was remove every trigger that would fire the old pathways. He couldn’t go to parties. He couldn’t attend salons.
The circuit that said “see invitation, feel excitement, go out” had no opportunity to fire. The only circuit that could fire was “sit at desk, write.”
That’s environment design. It makes the desired option the only option.
No willpower bullshit involved.
Hugo made going out impossible and redirected the energy to work.
Most people try to change their behaviour while keeping the environment the same.
The phone next to the bed, snacks in the pantry, the same social circle, hanging out with smokers (if you’re trying to quit).
They blame themselves when the old pathways fire when the environment was the problem.
The part Hugo didn’t know: the real rewiring, the myelin, the consolidation, the physical strengthening of the circuits he was building - they happened after he put the pen down for the day.
The work tagged the circuits. And sleep built them.
VIII - Sleep like your brain depends on it (because it does)
Human beings are the only species that deliberately deprive themselves of sleep for no apparent reason. - Matthew Walker
Sleep is where you press the save button.
Nothing up to this point happens without adequate sleep.
The rewiring doesn’t happen during the hard part.
During the struggle, you’re only tagging the circuits.
The physical change - the myelin thickening around the axon, the synapse strengthening - happens afterwards.
In deep rest. Overnight, in sleep.
Which is why you bang your head against a problem for three hours, go to bed defeated, and wake up able to do it.
Two important things (amongst many) happen during sleep that we care about for your brain:
Memory consolidation → your brain processes the day’s information and decides what to keep. Skip sleep and the learning won’t stick.
Metabolic clearing → your brain produces waste during the day and sleep flushes it out. It’s the cleaning crew that can only work when the office is empty.
Sleep is profoundly environmental too.
Fix the lighting, room temperature, consistent sleep and wake times, where your devices are, and you’ll sleep better than 99% of people.
IX - Your brain rewiring roadmap
Let’s make this concrete.
Pick one specific thing.
Let’s say you want to become someone who writes every morning. Not “a writer” in the aspirational sense.
Someone who sits down at 6:30 am, opens a notebook, and puts words on a page. That’s the whole identity.
Here’s how you build the neural pathway for it.
1. Start with your environment
The night before, put the notebook on your desk.
Open a blank page.
Leave the pen on top.
Charge your phone in the kitchen, not the bedroom.
The why matters: your brain defaults to the easiest path. When the alarm goes off and you’re groggy, the old path is “grab phone, scroll, stay in bed.”
You want the new path to be easier than the old one. A notebook already open on a desk is less friction than a phone in another room.
Notice what you just did: you removed the obstacles between you and the first step. No promises about waking up at 5 am or writing for two hours.
Just a notebook on a desk, open to a blank page.
The path is clear, and all you have to do is walk it.
2. Be ridiculously specific
“Write more” is not a goal your brain can act on. It’s too vague.
Neuroplasticity is context-specific. The circuits you want to strengthen fire in a particular place, at a particular time, doing a particular thing.
So pick: “I will sit at my desk at 6:30 am, open my notebook, and write for ten minutes.”
Not the outcome. Not “write a book” or “something good.”
Aim for the action.
The quality of the writing is irrelevant. The only thing that counts is whether you sat down and did it.
The first week, ten minutes might feel like nothing.
That’s the point. You’re training the pathway that says “6:30 am, desk, notebook, write.”
The content comes later. What matters is that the circuit fires.
3. Do the uncomfortable version
Once ten minutes feels easy, don’t add more time. Make it harder instead.
Write without stopping, write about something you’re avoiding, or write about something you’re afraid to publish.
The wobble is the signal.
If you sit down and every sentence flows, you’re on autopilot. Your brain isn’t tagging anything for editing.
The trick is to stay in the zone where you fail regularly but succeed sometimes.
Enough success to show your brain what “correct” looks like. Enough failure to trigger the sticky-note response that says “come back and fix this circuit.”
For our morning writer: the first wobble is just showing up. The second wobble is writing for ten minutes without stopping. The third wobble is writing something honest.
You move the target the moment the current one stops wobbling.
4. Repeat, but space it out
Ten minutes every morning beats two hours every Saturday.
Frequency beats duration.
When you cram, you stack reps on top of a circuit that’s already fatigued.
When you space it out, each session is a fresh error signal.
The practical takeaway: show up every day.
Some days you’ll have nothing. Write anyway. Even five minutes of half-assing it is reinforcing the pathway.
The session you almost skipped is worth more than the one that felt easy.
5. Control what you consume
“Neurons that fire together, wire together.”
If you spend the hour before bed scrolling, your brain is writing “slight discomfort, reach for phone, escape.” That’s hundreds of reps a day. Every day. For years.
Flip it. If you invest twenty minutes reading something that challenges you before you write, you’re wiring “discomfort, keep going, meaning arrives.” That’s the pathway you want.
For our morning writer: replace the first ten minutes of phone time with a book.
Anything. Fiction, nonfiction - doesn’t matter. You’re training the muscle of sustained attention.
The phone trains the opposite.
6. Sleep like your brain depends on it (because it does)
The rewiring doesn’t happen during the hard part.
During the struggle, you’re only tagging the circuits. The physical change (the myelin thickening and the superhighways getting built) happens afterwards.
In deep rest. Overnight.
Skip sleep and the learning won’t stick.
The practical version:
Consistent sleep and wake times
No caffeine late in the day (stop 10 hours before sleep)
No phone in the bedroom
No screens an hour before bed
Dim the lights an hour before bed
Room temperature on the cooler side
These are non-optional add-ons.
Treat sleep the same way a bodybuilder treats rest days.
You don’t grow in the gym. You grow between sessions.
If you remember one thing, the hardest phase is the one paying you the most.
Those early, wobbly, embarrassing reps are worth more than the smooth ones that come later.
The brain changes fastest when you’re struggling.
Don’t quit before the payoff.
I walked into a gym at 59 kg with no idea what I was doing.
I couldn’t clip into cycling shoes without falling over.
Both times, I thought I was just being stubborn. I was wrong about that too.
What I was doing, without knowing it, was walking the same route through a grassy field until the path became a highway.
Every rep built the next one.
Every wobble tagged a circuit for editing.
Every night of sleep laid the myelin that made tomorrow feel more natural.
What built those transformations is running in your brain too, right now.
It’s biology. And it works whether you’re using it intentionally or not.
You built the brain you have. You can build a different one.
The field is waiting.
